Carpet Cleaning vs Deep Cleaning: What's the Difference?

3 June 2026 5 min readBy ATG Cleaning Ltd

Customers regularly ring us asking for a 'deep clean' when they really mean carpets — or vice versa. The two services overlap but are priced, scheduled and equipped very differently. This guide clears up the confusion so you know exactly what to ask for, and what to expect to pay.

What is carpet cleaning?

Carpet cleaning is a targeted service focused entirely on soft flooring — carpets, rugs, stair runners and sometimes upholstery. The two most common methods are hot water extraction (steam cleaning) and low-moisture encapsulation. Both lift embedded soil, allergens and dust mites that a vacuum cannot reach.

A typical professional carpet clean uses commercial extraction equipment that injects hot water and detergent under pressure, then vacuums it back out along with the dirt. Drying time is usually 2–6 hours.

What is deep cleaning?

Deep cleaning is a whole-property service that addresses everything a routine clean skips: inside ovens and appliances, limescale, grout, skirting boards, light fittings, extractor fans, behind furniture, internal windows, cupboard interiors and high-level dusting.

Carpets may or may not be included in a deep clean — most companies treat carpet shampooing as a paid add-on because it requires different equipment and longer drying time.

Quick comparison

Scope: carpet cleaning = soft flooring only. Deep clean = entire property surfaces (and optionally carpets).

Equipment: carpet cleaning = extraction machine, rotary scrubber. Deep clean = steam cleaners, ladders, oven chemicals, descalers, microfibre system.

Time: carpet cleaning = 1–3 hours for an average home. Deep clean = 4–8 hours with a 2-person team.

Typical cost (UK 2026): carpet cleaning = £25–£40 per room. Deep clean = £180–£400 for a 2–3 bed home.

When to book carpet cleaning

Visible stains, lingering pet odours, annual maintenance, post-illness sanitisation, after a renovation when dust has settled into the pile, or before/after a tenancy change. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional cleaning every 12–18 months to keep warranties valid.

When to book a deep clean

Moving in or out, putting a property on the market, after building work, before or after a long-term let, before a major event, or simply as an annual reset alongside your regular cleaner. Deep cleans are also commonly booked spring and autumn as part of seasonal property maintenance.

When you actually need specialist cleaning instead

Neither carpet cleaning nor deep cleaning is appropriate when the property contains biohazards — blood, faecal matter, drug paraphernalia, dead animals, severe mould or hoarding. In these cases you need a licensed biohazard cleaning company with full PPE, hospital-grade chemistry and clinical waste disposal.

Trying to extract a carpet contaminated with bodily fluids will spread pathogens and ruin the equipment. If in doubt, ask — a reputable cleaner will tell you straight away whether your job is domestic, deep or specialist.
