How Often Should Offices Be Professionally Cleaned?
Office cleaning frequency isn't one-size-fits-all. A 6-person creative studio has very different needs to a 200-seat call centre or a medical office. This guide gives you a clear, defensible cleaning schedule based on team size, footfall and industry — with the compliance and productivity reasoning behind each recommendation.
The short answer
Most offices need a professional clean 3–5 times per week, with a full deep clean once a quarter. Below 10 staff, 2–3 times a week is usually enough. Above 50 staff, expect daily cleaning plus a dedicated daytime cleaner for washrooms and kitchens.
Frequency should always be driven by three factors: number of people in the space, how many of those interact with the public, and whether food is prepared on-site.
Daily tasks (every working day)
Empty all bins and replace liners. Restock soap, hand towels and toilet paper. Clean and disinfect all toilets, urinals, sinks and washroom touchpoints. Wipe down kitchen surfaces, sinks, taps, microwave handles and fridge handles. Spot-mop spills.
Disinfect high-touch points: door handles, light switches, lift buttons, reception desks, shared phones, printer touchscreens. Post-pandemic, HSE guidance still recommends daily disinfection of these surfaces in any office with shared equipment.
Weekly tasks (1–3 times per week)
Vacuum all carpeted areas and mop hard floors. Dust desks, monitors, shelves and window sills. Clean internal glass — partitions, meeting room doors, reception screens. Damp-wipe chair arms and meeting room tables.
Smaller offices (under 10 people) can usually compress daily and weekly into 2–3 visits per week. Anything above 25 staff almost always needs a daily presence to keep washrooms presentable.
Monthly tasks
Vacuum upholstered chairs and sofas. Dust skirting boards, picture frames, light fittings and air vents. Descale kettles, coffee machines and washroom taps. Clean inside microwaves and fridges. Polish wood and stainless steel surfaces.
Quarterly deep clean
Carpet steam cleaning or encapsulation, hard floor strip and reseal, internal window cleaning, full kitchen and washroom descale, ceiling vent and air conditioning unit cleaning, fabric chair and sofa shampoo. A quarterly deep clean typically extends carpet life by 30–50% and dramatically reduces sick days during winter months.
Industry-specific frequency
Medical and dental practices: full daily clean with clinical-grade disinfectants, plus a deep clean monthly. Food prep environments: daily plus end-of-day kitchen sanitisation. Schools and childcare: daily with weekly toy and surface disinfection. Warehouses with office space: office daily, warehouse weekly with quarterly industrial deep clean.
The business case
Research from the International Sanitary Supply Association suggests poor office hygiene increases sick days by up to 80% during cold and flu season. A consistent professional cleaning programme typically pays for itself in recovered productivity within the first quarter, before you even count staff morale, client perception and asset preservation.
