6 Signs You Need a Trauma Cleaning Specialist (Not a Regular Cleaner)
Not every difficult clean is a biohazard — but some absolutely are, and using a regular cleaner risks property damage, voided insurance, psychological harm and even criminal liability for unsafe waste disposal. Here are six clear signs to call a specialist.
1. There is blood or bodily fluid present
Any visible blood, vomit, urine or faecal contamination beyond a minor spill is a biohazard. It carries bloodborne pathogen risk and requires hospital-grade chemistry, BBP-rated PPE and licensed clinical waste disposal.
2. A coroner, police or paramedic has attended
If the emergency services have been at the property, the situation requires post-incident biohazard decontamination — not a mop and bucket.
3. There is a persistent organic smell
Decomposition and severe biological odour cannot be eliminated by standard cleaning, scented sprays or even shampooed carpets. It requires source removal, often porous material replacement and ozone treatment.
4. Needles, sharps or drug paraphernalia
Sharps must be handled by trained operatives with puncture-resistant equipment and licensed clinical waste disposal. Never bag in general waste.
5. Severe hoarding with biohazards or pests
A normal house clearance company will refuse — and is not insured — once faecal matter, mould, dead animals or infestations are involved. This is specialist territory.
6. The property is an insurance claim
Insurers require itemised scopes of work, consignment notes and CPD-accredited specialists. A domestic cleaner's invoice will not settle a trauma claim.
